Meat Free Monday One day a week can make a world of difference

Climate Week kicks off with a Meat Free Monday

Britain’s biggest climate change campaign, Climate Week, starts today and this year it is calling on supporters to have a Meat Free Monday.

The FAO estimates that livestock production is responsible for almost 15 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, while other organisations estimate it could be even higher. Climate Week is working in partnership with Meat Free Monday, pointing out that “reducing meat consumption is a key way to lower your carbon footprint”.

This week will see hundreds of campaigners, including politicians and celebrities, lending their support to help fight climate change and promote long term sustainable living. Teams from schools, charities and workplaces can take up the challenge to come up with innovative ways to help protect the environment, with awards available for the best ideas. One way to take part is to prepare a sustainable meal for family or friends, and register this on the Climate Change website.

“Join me in making a meat-free meal on the Monday of Climate Week”, said Meat Free Monday co-founder Paul McCartney. “Eating more fruit and vegetables and less meat is an easy and enjoyable way to combat climate change.”

Other tips for making our homes and lifestyles greener – including taking shorter showers and washing clothes at 30 degrees – can be found at www.climateweek.com.

The website also has recipes from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Levi Roots and Valentine Warner and other celebrity chefs, and recipe collections from the Vegetarian Society, the Vegan Society, Love Food Hate Waste and, of course, Meat Free Monday!
