Meat Free Monday One day a week can make a world of difference

Croatian environment ministry joins Green Monday

Croatia’s environment ministry has joined the Green Monday campaign – the country’s equivalent of Meat Free Monday.

Employees of the Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection will get a choice of meatless meals at their canteen at the start of the week.

The environment minister Mirela Holy (pictured above) agreed to sign her department up to the campaign to highlight the significant impact that the livestock industry is having on the environment through the generation of harmful greenhouse gases.

Green Monday is an initiative promoted by Animal Friends Croatia. The animal rights organisation is now hoping to persuade other public authorities, institutions and companies to follow suit.

It has also launched a new Green Monday website to encourage ordinary Croatians to take part. As well as information on the health and environmental benefits of a reduced-meat diet, users can register to have recipes emailed to them.
