Meat Free Monday One day a week can make a world of difference

London to get its second Veggie Pret

The sandwich chain is opening another meat free store this spring

Good news for soup and sandwich-loving MFMers: Pret A Manger is to open a second meat free store. The food chain welcomed in the new year with the announcement that London will be getting another Veggie Pret after the resounding success of its first, which opened last summer.

It had been thought the new store would start life as a pop-up, as did the original Veggie Pret, which opened on Broadwick Street, Soho, last summer. The standard Pret was rebranded for six weeks to gauge demand but meat free products flew off the shelves so quickly that the decision was made in autumn 2016 to make it a permanent fixture.

Off the back of its success, Pret’s bosses have decided to dive in and open a fully-fledged store in central London in the spring. It will become only the UK’s second green-branded Veggie Pret – though hopefully many more will follow in time!

In terms of its location, Pret chief executive Clive Schlee, speaking last year, said: “The odds are that it will be a visible corner in the City of London, where we can convert an existing shop to a pop-up and see if it resonates with City workers before deciding whether or not to make it permanent.”

Those who can’t wait until spring will be pleased to know that the company has also recently launched more veggie and vegan products, including three new vegan breakfasts, three new dairy and gluten-free soups, and three new veggie pots.

The veggie pots – Courgette, Rainbow and Asian Greens – were trialled at the first Veggie Pret and were deemed such a success that they are now offered across all of Pret’s 400-plus stores across the UK.

On January 24th three new meat free soups were also introduced: Spiced Corn and Quinoa, Greens and Grains, and Cauliflower and Chickpea Dhal, while Pret’s miso soup recipe has become vegan.

Update 4 April, 2017: Today Pret opened its second veggie outlet in Shoreditch.
